Join Steve James for a weekend of meditation, movement, and time in nature. This is an opportunity to spend the weekend in Ojai, California deepening into the practice of meditation.

Steve’s approach to practice is pragmatic, enthusiastic, and rigorous. You can expect to be challenged in an encouraging and understanding environment.

Many people find their meditation practice operates from the neck up and ignores the body. In addition to traditional seated meditation and nature walks, you will experience Steve’s Movement Koan® Method, a fusion of joint-nourishing movement and body-based mindfulness to bring your bodily experience into your meditation.

Experienced meditators will gain an opportunity to deepen their practice in extended sits, while new meditators will gain exposure to a variety of techniques and lots of time for application. You will apply the techniques ‘off the cushion’ in movement explorations and nature walks in the wilderness back country around Michaela’s ranch.

This event is open to all genders and experience levels.

Some features of the weekend:

  • Explore how to meditate with different techniques for different situations
  • Lots of group meditation time to deepen your practice
  • Experience Steve’s Movement Koan® Method to deepen your bodily experience in meditation
  • Learn about theory and practice in lectures and Q&A
  • Apply the techniques ‘off the cushion’ in movement explorations and nature walks
  • Optional posture clinic to optimize your sitting position

Although most of the weekend will be in silence, there will be opportunities for interaction and group discussion.

Lunch Saturday and Sunday will be provided.


Deep and authentic compassion

Steve’s teaching philosophy is rooted in a deep and authentic compassion and concern for the well-being of others. I recognized a couple things immediately: he really knew the material on a level far beyond memorization, and he was using cutting edge physical-neurological techniques to prepare our minds and bodies for the difficult work we would be doing during the workshop.

The techniques he was using are the kind that are used by some of the world’s top athletes today to fine-tune their nervous systems in order to maximize their physical performance gains. Steve had created a synthesis of methods which I had never seen used this way before. According to Bloom’s Taxonomy of Learning Domains, synergy is the second highest form of learning, followed by evaluation which is the highest. Steve was using both.
